Come stay in our National Historic Register Home in the Stockade District of Uptown Kingston, steps from all the shops and restaurants. You will enjoy a restful night sleep on a new queen mattress with new pillows, 100% cotton sheets, and down comforter. Curl up with a book near the bay window in your private sitting room, or enjoy a tete a tete with your loved one. This room is also graced with an impressive painting by Kevin Paulsen, which is also for sale. Paulsen is an American artist born in Missouri, but living in Kingston. He has a devoted international following and an extensive exhibition history. He has distinguished himself as an artist whose vision is paradoxically naïve looking yet deeply informed by art history and well established in the canon of contemporary art.
Paulsen’s artwork is singular in the narrative it presents. He portrays civilization, half-mythical, half historical, depicting nature and man in primordial and sometimes precarious harmony. The artist conjures a utopia in which man and beast frolic, harvest, dance, and work, in blissful co-existence. The viewer senses that the balance of the theatrical scene is momentary and could be upended by dark forces. Paulsen’s paintings and drawings are direct and earnest; we feel his urgency to capture the subject and record it before his fantastical vision dances away. The artist as a shamanistic puppeteer is felt strongly in each narrative he creates.
Stylistically, Paulsen’s painting evokes a vernacular style that recalls the tradition of Early American folk muralists and pays homage to man’s predilection for storytelling, illustration, and decoration. Paulsen’s paintings appear to be made as a fresco, with uneven edges, (actually polystyrene topped with a thin veneer of pigmented plaster) floating within the frame. Cracks and fissures and areas of intentional distress are intrinsic to the surface and introduce a quality of unpredictability and allude to the passage of time.
Paulsen’s work has been showcased in the Fifth Avenue windows and in the galleries of Bergdorf Goodman, NYC, Chronogram Magazine, House Beautiful, Traditional Home, and Architectural Digest, to name a few. His murals can be seen in restaurants across the country and his work is in over 80 private collections in the US, England, France, and Germany.
You will have a private bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, as well as your own private sitting room. The foyer and main hallway are shared with other guests.

The Stockade District of Kingston, New York, also known as Uptown Kingston, is a neighborhood steeped in history and brimming with culture and entertainment. Originally known as Wiltwyck, it was one of the first Dutch settlements in the 1600s and was surrounded by a stockade fence, giving it its current name.
Music lovers will find plenty to enjoy in the Stockade District, with live music events happening regularly and the recently renovated UPAC, which offers concerts and theatrical performances throughout the year. Art enthusiasts will appreciate the neighborhood's First Saturdays Gallery Walk, where they can check out the latest art shows, sample wine and cheese, and even purchase something to take home. The district is also home to some of the most impressive murals in the country, thanks to the popular O+ festival, which invites some of the best mural artists to showcase their work.
History buffs will find much to explore in the Stockade District, with the Senate House Museum and Park located right across the street from the Wiltwyck, along with the Senate Garage, making it the perfect place to stay for visitors attending weddings there. The Four Corners, the only intersection in the country with four stone houses that predate the Revolution, is a must-see. The Matthew Pearson House, now a museum open to visitors, and the Rough Draft Bookstore and Bar, where visitors can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat while browsing books, are located in this intersection.
Families with children will appreciate the Antique Fire Truck Museum, where kids can hop in and ring the bell, see the horse-drawn water tanks, and view a huge collection of helmets and other gear. The Catskill Mountain Railroad offers a chance for the whole family to take in the local scenery and enjoy holiday-themed rides, such as the Polar Express. The Stockade District is also home to the best Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings.
Foodies will be in heaven in the Stockade District, with world-class restaurants found on every block, including coffee shops, organic eateries, and a vintage cocktail bar that has been featured in the New York Times. If you're looking to explore the other end of town, you'll be treated to more great restaurants, shops, a maritime museum, a trolly museum, and a beautiful waterfront walkway. The Stockade District of Kingston truly has something for everyone and is the perfect destination for a visit filled with culture, entertainment, and history.
The neighborhood is extremely walking friendly, you don't need a car if you just want to enjoy a weekend here. Uber and Lyft are available to get to the other parts of town, as well as a city and county bus. If you want to take day trips to other destinations a car is helpful. We do have off street parking, (if it snows, only 4 wheel drive cars with snow tires will be able to get up our driveway though) and are about 5 short blocks fromTrailways Bus Station. We are about 20 min from the Amtrack station in Rhinecliff, and 35 min from the train station in Poughkeepsie
We have some limited parking behind our house. It is available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Please make sure you park on the left-hand side of the lot, behind our house (the brick one). Our neighbor gets very upset when people park on their side. if a spot is not available please use street side parking, which is available only 1 block away on John St, Fair St, or further down on Clinton Ave, as well as the rest of the stockade area. there are also several lots only a few blocks away including free parking behind the county building on nights and weekends, and they have a free EV charging station. Please note that we are located in the City of Kingston and that typical city noises are present. There is the potential for traffic noise, including the occasional emergency vehicle siren, trucks backing up, neighbors doing lawn maintenance, etc.
My wife and I visited to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Julie recommended a local florist and helped me get the flowers delivered and set up in our room for our arrival. She also kindly gave us a bottle of Prosecco! Very thorough and accommodating. The room itself was beautiful and well appointed. The bed was comfortable and we slept well. The house is near everything in town, you are less than a 5-10 minute walk from all the shops and restaurants. Highly recommend!
