We are always happy to provide guests with recommendations on what to do and where to eat. We love Kingston and are more than happy to share our enthusiasm with our guests.
The Stockade District of Kingston, New York, also known as Uptown Kingston, is a neighborhood steeped in history and brimming with culture and entertainment. Originally known as Wiltwyck, it was one of the first Dutch settlements in the 1600s and was surrounded by a stockade fence, giving it its current name.
Music lovers will find plenty to enjoy in the Stockade District, with live music events happening regularly and the recently renovated UPAC, which offers concerts and theatrical performances throughout the year. Art enthusiasts will appreciate the neighborhood's First Saturdays Gallery Walk, where they can check out the latest art shows, sample wine and cheese, and even purchase something to take home. The district is also home to some of the most impressive murals in the country, thanks to the popular O+ festival, which invites some of the best mural artists to showcase their work.
History buffs will find much to explore in the Stockade District, with the Senate House Museum and Park located right across the street from the Wiltwyck, along with the Senate Garage, making it the perfect place to stay for visitors attending weddings there. The Four Corners, the only intersection in the country with four stone houses that predate the Revolution, is a must-see. The Matthew Pearson House, now a museum open to visitors, and the Rough Draft Bookstore and Bar, where visitors can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat while browsing books, are located in this intersection.
Families with children will appreciate the Antique Fire Truck Museum, where kids can hop in and ring the bell, see the horse-drawn water tanks, and view a huge collection of helmets and other gear. The Catskill Mountain Railroad offers a chance for the whole family to take in the local scenery and enjoy holiday-themed rides, such as the Polar Express. The Stockade District is also home to the best Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings.
Foodies will be in heaven in the Stockade District, with world-class restaurants found on every block, including coffee shops, organic eateries, and a vintage cocktail bar that has been featured in the New York Times. If you're looking to explore the other end of town, you'll be treated to more great restaurants, shops, a maritime museum, a trolly museum, and a beautiful waterfront walkway. The Stockade District of Kingston truly has something for everyone and is the perfect destination for a visit filled with culture, entertainment, and history.
The neighborhood is extremely walking friendly, you don't need a car if you just want to enjoy a weekend here. Uber and Lyft are available to get to the other parts of town, as well as a city and county bus. If you want to take day trips to other destinations a car is helpful. We do have off street parking, (if it snows, only 4 wheel drive cars with snow tires will be able to get up our driveway though) and are about 5 short blocks fromTrailways Bus Station. We are about 20 min from the Amtrack station in Rhinecliff, and 35 min from the train station in Poughkeepsie
